TalkTalk lost 101,000 customers and suffered costs of £60m as a result of a cyber-attack on the company in October, but said business was returning to normal. The telecoms company said the net loss of customers in the three months to the end of December reflected fewer connections and greater “churn” as customers chose to leave. But revenue increased 1.8% in the period, the third quarter of TalkTalk’s financial year.
TalkTalk’s computer systems were hacked in October in what was originally feared to be a mass raid on customers’ personal data. The attack proved to be less successful than first believed, with about 4% of the company’s 4 million customers affected and no financial loss incurred by customers despite the partial disclosure of payment details.

In today’s news: A 16 year-old boy from Norwich was in custody and his address was being searched, London police said in a statement on Tuesday.
On Saturday, a 20 year-old man from Staffordshire was arrested following the detainment of a 16 year-old in West London and a 15 year-old boy in Northen Ireland. All three have been released on bail.
TalkTalk shocked customers last month when the broadband, TV, mobile and fixed-line service provider said it had been hacked, potentially putting the private details of its 4 million customers in the hands of criminals.
The company has since said the attack was much smaller than originally thought, with fewer than 21,000 bank accounts numbers and sort codes having been accessed.
Fewer than 28,000 obscured bank details were accessed and fewer than 1.2 million customer email addresses, names and phone numbers were also accessed.

A third suspect was arrested on Saturday following the data breach at TalkTalk by police, under the Computer Misuse Act. The communications provider has said it has a greater assessment of the situation and estimates less data was exposed than originally thought. The man has since been bailed.
The 20-year old man, who is from Staffordshire, has not been named. The two other arrests following the incident were of a 15 year-old in County Antrim and a 16 year-old from Feltham.
The breach occurred on October 21st, with reports of personal details including names, addresses, passwords and banking details being exposed to internet hackers. An advisory has since stated an estimated 21,000 unique bank numbers and sort codes were taken – a significant downscaling of fears that 4 million customers were compromised.

If you can’t reach a chum in the UK, chances are they’ve fallen victim to a substantial outage that’s hit BT’s voice and broadband services. Or a Total Inability To Support Usual Performance (TITSUP) incident.
The carrier appears to be suffering from two issues, the first reported to us by Reg readers Colin and Neil who’ve complained of very slow downloads, difficulties accessing the Web, dropped packets galore and traceroutes that don’t make it past the home gateway.
A glance at the carrier’s service status page omits mention of the slow access problem, but does reveal 15 outstanding issues including one that’s hitting over 40 communities from Manchester to Newquay.
BT says “A small number of our customers in the areas shown below, may experience a loss of telephone and/or broadband services. We hope to have service restored as quickly as possible and apologise for any inconvenience this may be causing. Services can be affected by a variety of reasons such as damage caused by 3rd parties or cable theft.”
