Off the back of the inaugural event last year, ICE attracted over 135 exhibitors and more than 4,800 visitors from across the globe. The two-day event was well received and proved to be among the most inclusive, well-rounded, and attended cybersecurity events in the calendar. It caters to industry professionals of all backgrounds, from start-ups to established vendors, software developers to C-Level executives.

With networking a top priority for attendees, guests will have the opportunity to meet senior cybersecurity professionals from household names such as Google, Microsoft, Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Network Rail and Boohoo; as well as government representatives from across various departments, like the Home Office. Highly regarded members of International Cyber Expo’s Advisory Council such as Nick Bell (CEO, National Cyber Resilience Centre Group), Dr Emma Philpott MBE (CEO, IASME), Paul Chichester (Director of Operations, NCSC) and Juliette Wilcox, CMG (Cyber Security Ambassador, Department of International Trade) will also be walking the show floor.

International Cyber Expo 2023 event highlights will include:

  • Global Cyber Summit: A combination of roundtable discussions, fireside chats and presentations that will look at real cyber issues impacting us today and in tomorrow’s interconnected world. This year, the Summit will explore themes such as the cyber skills gap, international perspectives surrounding the rise of artificial intelligence including ChatGPT, as well as the recent introduction of significant legislative changes in the industry. Uniquely, this year’s Summit will also look at the Russian cyber attacks on Ukraine and elsewhere, from a Ukrainian perspective with close advisors to the country’s government agencies weighing in.
  • Tech Hub Stage: An opportunity for vendors to launch products/services and talk about real-life applications and case studies of game-changing solutions.
  • Senior-Level Roundtables (by invitation only): An intimate get-together of 8 – 10 Chief Information Security Officers and other senior representatives exploring the latest challenges they are facing, and their insights on emerging trends.
  • Immersive Cyber Demonstrations: Professional actors from Crisis Cast deliver immersive demonstrations on how to prepare for cyber threats, explore vulnerabilities and survive in the new age of information warfare.
  • Connect+ Live: A meeting service to connect qualified international buyers with sellers based on their buying needs.
  • International Pavilions: A range of International Pavilions expand the market opportunity and international nature of this high-level cybersecurity event.
  • Government Zone: With support spanning the Home Office, UKDSE, UK Cyber Council, Joint Security and Resilience Centre (JSaRC) and more, the Government Zone provides a central meeting point for visitors to network and discover the latest projects and plans for the UK’s future with the most senior and influential figures in UK Government departments, organisations and agencies.
  • Cyber Griffin Tabletop Exercise: The award-winning tabletop exercise is designed to explore the decisions that people make in real-life scenarios in order to protect their businesses from modern-day threats.

“We are thrilled to be opening registration for International Cyber Expo, our London-based cybersecurity event, in its second consecutive year. We have already received an astounding amount of interest from both exhibitors and visitors alike, and we cannot wait to reconvene in September this year for another great event,” said Rachael Shattock, Group Event Director at Nineteen Group.

Eskenzi PR have once again decided to run Security Serious Week from 3rd TO 7th OCTOBER to encourage UK Plc to take security more seriously. The whole ethos of Security Serious Week is to garner the cyber-security community to give something back and encourage others to take security more seriously in the hope that together we can create a more secure environment to do business and ultimately act as an enabler to make UK PLC a safer place to trade online.
During the inaugural Security Serious Week last year, over 3000 people took advantage of the 45+ webinars and over 100 people came together for a photocall outside the Tower of London to show that they are “Security Serious”.
This year we are introducing two new events to run alongside the Week.  The first is a Security Serious Conference; on the morning of 3rd October the second is the Unsung Heroes Awards on 6th October.
The Conference will be held for free for 80 business influencers and end users at the prestigious Churchill Room at the Department of Culture, Media and at 100 Parliament Street. The theme of the conference will be around security awareness and run 3 key sessions:

  1. Changing the Culture of UK Plc to “Think before you Click” – making security awareness sticky and fun – a number of CISOs will present on how they are managing to do this within their companies, including GSK, Canon UK, Publicis and The Economist
  2. Top 3 things to make the board sit up and take security seriously – including the importance and changing role that GDPR will have on your business
  3. Why you should you hire a hacker – with speakers such as Jennifer Radcliffe, a well known social engineering expert, Ian Glover head of CREST and Pete Wood, an ethical hacker.

If you would be keen to be a speaker or indeed attend, please email saul@itsecurityguru.com.
The Security Serious Unsung Heroes Awards
These awards are taking place for the first time this year on October 6th in Spitalfields to celebrate the people, not the products, who work tirelessly securing UK businesses, Government and the national critical infrastructure.  These are the women and men who have on numerous occasions saved our bacon, from companies being brought to their knees by a breach or a continuity disaster.   There will be no fees to enter the awards or indeed if nominees are shortlisted, they won’t have to pay to come to the awards night either. In order to make this financially viable, we have 10 sponsors paying to cover the costs of the event, including Mimecast, Acumin, AlienVault, Netskope, Lastline, whiteCryption, Imperva, CrowdStrike, Publicis Groupe, Varonis, Proofpoint and GSK.
The whole ethos of Security Serious Week is to garner the cyber-security community to give something back and encourage others to take security more seriously in the hope that together we can create a more secure environment to do business and ultimately act as an enabler to make UK PLC a safer place to trade online.
THE DEADLINE FOR THE UNSUNG HEROES AWARDS HAS BEEN EXTENDED TO FRIDAY 22ND JULY SO IF YOU THINK YOU ARE DESERVING OF AN AWARD OR WOULD LIKE TO NOMINATE SOMEONE WHO IS please go to www.securityserious.com.

The World Economic Forum gathers each year some of the world’s biggest political and business leaders, all in the area of a few square kilometers.
While this may be the perfect method of discussing and advancing sensitive world economic topics and various agendas, for infosec professionals, this is a nightmare scenario. Kaspersky security experts expect APT groups to intensify their efforts and attempt to hack into the computers and mobile devices of high-ranking officials from various countries and companies, gathered all on the same WiFi network, either at their hotels or the conferences.

Picking a programming language to learn can be a stressful task. The trendy language at any given time isn’t necessarily one that anyone will care about in a year, much less the one that’ll get you the best gigs.
It’s interesting, then, to see what language programmers turn to when they’ve got their pick of the litter — when they’re coding not with some bosses’ wishes in mind, but when they’re just cracking away at a project for the hell of it.
Like, say, at a hackathon.
This morning, ChallengePost — a tool that acts as the backend infrastructure for a pretty good chunk of the hackathons that go down (including the ones we host before each TechCrunch Disrupt) — changed their name to Devpost. In celebration of the new name, they’ve released a big ol’ data dump of a bunch of stuff they’ve learned over the past year.
What mobile platforms show up at hackathons the most? Which programming languages are most popular? Which APIs do people tap most often?
After ~160 hackathons with nearly 10,000 projects by 13,281 hackers, they’ve got some answers. You can find their full report over here, but I’ve highlighted some of the most interesting stuff below.
The fan favorite mobile platforms? Android with 38.2%, iOS with 22.7%, and Windows Phone at a distant 4.9%. The remaining 34.2% seemingly didn’t mark a favorite.

The dust has settled upon another RSA Conference and it was a pleasure to attend this industry’s largest and best security event.
After the debarcle in 2014 where a breakaway event allowed some speakers to withdraw from RSA Conference 2015 had a much more positive vibe with two large expo halls, track sessions in a different centre and keynotes from the industry’s finest names, Government and celebrities.
I arrived on Saturday 18th and attended BSIdes San Francisco on the Sunday. This was held at the offices of OpenDNS in SOMA and saw some excellent presentations on cloud security, media, coordinated actions and a panel from the EFF. Once again this format of conference proved to be a winner not only for the quality of speaker, but also for the community which backs and organises it.
The RSA conference began on Monday in some part, with initial sessions on the (ISC)2 Global Workforce Study and the skills shortage, which included a panel of people including Angela Messer, executive vice president of Booz Allen Hamilton, whom I wondered had considered the state of security skills considering the actions of a former member of staff!
As mentioned earlier, there were two full expo halls and these opened on the Monday evening. Personally I don’t see the benefit of the two halls, particularly as this divided the delegates into the two halls. However one hall was significantly larger than the other as it gave space to the start-ups who chose to exhibit, while other vendors took the opportunity to demonstrate new products and solutions, and give live presentations to interested visitors. In case you are short of pens, T-shirts and other swag, then this is the best place to stock up. For those with a large quantity already overflowing our cupboards and drawers, I prefer to talk to the people.
One key theme of the conference was that of threat intelligence. Whether it was the continued theme of information sharing (which dominated my last visit in 2013) or the concept of boosting existing technology with open source feeds, there was plenty of talk of the concept.
From the opening day keynote, this year delivered by RSA Security President Amit Yoran taking over from the established Art Coviello, who said that we should harness “credible sources of threat intelligence and leverage it for increased speed so analysts can respond to increased threats” as part of his ways to improve security, to Jeh Johnson from the Department of Homeland of Security saying that its departments are there to “get better intelligence to help you” to a very good presentation by Mark Orlando, director of cyber operations at Foreground Security who said: “There is a lot more to intelligence than indictators.”
Orlando’s talk was the most direct on the topic that I saw, where he made the telling comment that “if you are paying $100,000s you dont want it acting like a souped up IDS.”
I chose Orlando’s talk as he was addressing the subject directly, and I had heard plenty about the concept in the preceding months and met some of the new vendors operating in the space. It also meant missing the talk by Dan Geer, but I did manage to catch talks by other security “rockstars” including Bruce Schneier, Chris Hoff, Art Gilliand and Andy Ellis.
One of the things which has always drawn me to RSA Conference was the level of political presentation, and one of the best was a joint presentation between the White House’s Michael Daniel and Natalie Black from the Cabinet Office, which demonstrated the special relationship between the USA and UK and its shared interests in cyber crime and security matters. There are some recent success stories between Governments in terms of botnet takedowns and operations, while in discussion on the US Government issuing sanctions against those convicted of cyber crime, Black said that from a “UK perspective we are following this closely” and was talking to the UN and EU and this was an area it continued to observe.
Speaking of collaboration, one of the factors that make people return to RSA Conference is the social scene and this year saw a number of vendors work together to bring a better quality of party. Sadly as one of the hard-working Brits it was a struggle to maintain the stamina to do a full day and night, but as I said at the start of this blog, RSA Conference remains a great standard for IT security events and with a return set for the UK in early June, I hope the organisers can keep this event moving forward as this year was one of the best I had attended.

Following the content for presentation voting process, confirmed speakers include KPMG’s Stephen Bonner, analysts Aaron Finnon and Graham Sutherland and Jericho Forum and Global Identity Foundation co-founder Paul Simmonds. Full details can be found here and tickets will be made available where others are unable to attend.

The conference has already confirmed renowned industry speaker Trey Ford as its keynote speaker. Paul Batson, one of the organisers, said: “This year has been a real challenge due to a change in some of the core team but the community are really pulling together to make this another great BSides. Thomas and I really believe in the BSides concept of providing a free conference to allow those passionate about infosec to get together and talk about the things that really matter to the community.”

Also announced at the weekend was the shortlist for the 2014 European Security Blogger awards. With nine awards to be given out on the evening of the 30th April, the shortlist for the nine awards is available here.

Organiser Brian Honan said: “The main goal of the event is to allow those within the security community, who share their knowledge via their blogs, to get to meet other likeminded individuals. The actual awards themselves are a fun distraction to the evening where those who do contribute to the community are recognised for their efforts.”
